I don't have answers to Health Care. But seriously, who thinks the government will do anything but botch this? In time, it will get botched if it is taken out of free market control.
I don't pretend to be fact-filled on the health care topic, but my concern isn't about putting the government "in charge of all health care". My concern is about putting the federal government "in charge of ANY health care."
The government doesn't have a track record of letting go of any charge, they only seem to accumulate charges that should be handled either civilly or at non-federal levels of government.
To further clarify my perspective taken while looking at fundamentals rather than specifics, history shows that government offices and staff are generally incompetent and corruptible. So, keep the unaccountable people who work in blame-deflecting offices out of control positions on anything you don't want botched.
It is my impression that the way the system exists now is the cause of insurance companies beating around in Washington lobbies to get their way in the health care industry. This eludes to the government's vulnerability to their external influence. Now, imagine that same power wielded from an official office appointed to govern elements of the industry. Imagine what effect these already influential insurance companies could have when they manage to get a "bought person or people" into that position of power.
When we put power in the hands of a corruptible entity we set ourselves up for not having a say in the outcome, but while that power remains in a capitalistic society we all vote every day with our dollars.
For example, we could diminish the power of AT&T if we all decided to, because no law says we can't use another company, another network and another provider. We have that freedom until a law is passed that says we all have to have a phone service in case of emergency. Then they decide that AT&T is the company of choice for everyone who can't afford phone service and their monthly service charges will be paid for by our tax dollars, whether we like the company or not. Now, since AT&T's inside men are in the office, we don't get to vote at all whether AT&T gets to exist or not, because someone else controls our dollars. We have no say in their quality requirements, but the government will have to oversee that. With time, as more and more tangled requirements between AT&T and the federal government emerge it would likely evolve into governmental vested interest or control in AT&T. This would make the role and power of the government bigger. One more charge taken on by the federal government, who has no business in this role. With even more time in federal hands it will most likely end up botched completely, requiring more involvement, more budget to throw at the problem, and more bickering over who is at fault.
How far off am I? I'd love to hear educated comment supporting, refuting or correcting my process of thought here.
