Dear Congressman Blunt:
Thank you for your reply. I appreciate the perspective that puts this bill in play, and understand the threat that foreign influence can pose to our political system. I would caution, however, that it is most important that the disclosure be restricted to the offending sources. If we allow well-intending or mal-intending government bureaus have access to lists of supporters of organizations that they don't necessarily agree with, we are opening up to great inevitability of abuse of power that will target healthy maven organizations that share warnings of liberty and freedom stifling legislation and political activity. I like my freedom. I like being an American as long as I am free. Please protect that for me by not allowing legislation to even enter a path where compromise of our freedom is an eventual possibility.
If this bill is at all able to on its own allow, or set a precedent that will allow, the erosion of American constitutional freedom, please vote NO on the H.R. 5175 DISCLOSE Act until it is altered to ONLY limit the influence of foreign efforts that attempt to undermine our country's freedom and politics.
Thank you for your energy and responsiveness.
Sincerely,
Scott Bratcher

Dear Scott:
Thank you for contacting me regarding the Democracy is Strengthened by Casting Light on Spending in Elections Act. I appreciate the opportunity to respond to your concerns.
On April 29, 2010, Congressman Chris Van Hollen introduced H.R. 5175, the DISCLOSE Act. This legislation would prohibit foreign influence in Federal elections, to prohibit government contractors from making expenditures with respect to such elections and to establish additional disclosure requirements with respect to spending in such elections. Currently, this measure is under consideration in the House Committees on Administration and the Judiciary.
Should H.R. 5175 come before the House of Representatives for a vote, I will keep your thoughts in mind. Again, thank you for contacting me. I look forward to hearing from you in the future.
Sincere regards, Roy Blunt
Member of Congress
