I have to admit I find it refreshing when a customer service hold line says, "If you would like to hold without music, please press the # key now." However, it should be reversed. The default should be primarily silence with occasional wait time updates (not repeating ads, just basic helpful info or simple expected hold time.
I should be required to press # to activate the bad music only if I'm feeling saucy. Hold music may have once served its purpose but now I'm either listening to my own music, watching something, reading, or sitting in peace...by choice. Don't impress your musical taste, distaste, or elevator concoctions on me just because I await your rep to arrive on my call.
Message to companies who buy phone services:
Disable it. Turn it off. Configure it inactive. Kill it. Don't need it.

Default it off. Allow it disabled. Kill it. Don't need it.
